A developmental, structural or substantive edit focusses on elements of your work such as narrative voice, point of view, structure, plotting, characterisation, pace, setting and themes. In short, it is an assessment of the conceptual integrity of your work (does it need rewriting or restructuring? is it appropriate and effective? does it flow?) It aims to ensure that a manuscript is suitable for its intended readership and purpose. This is the first step towards publication. A developmental edit is different to a manuscript assessment or critique as, while a manuscript assessment is a report that offers broad strokes what you might like to improve in your manuscript, usually before the editing process begins, a developmental edit offers targeted and specific advice on how you can address those issues identified.
What will you get?
I will read your completed manuscript and provide a detailed written report in PDF format that will identify what is working and what isn’t in your manuscript and provide you with clear, constructive feedback and advice on what you can do about it to improve the manuscript.
